Revelation 21:1-9, "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife."

THE NEW HEAVEN AND THE NEW EARTH
Now is the time for a fresh start. God has finished his work of redeeming mankind. The time is at hand to redeem a fallen world. God will do this by creating anew the paradise he made when he first walked with Adam in the garden. The old will be replaced with the new and the corrupt with the incorruptible.
Easton's Bible Dictionary gives the following definition for heaven:
HEAVEN:
(1.) Definitions. The phrase "heaven and earth" is used to indicate the whole universe (Gen. 1:1; Jer. 23:24; Acts 17:24). According to the Jewish notion there were three heavens,
(a) The firmament, as "fowls of the heaven" (Gen. 2:19; 7:3, 23; Ps. 8:8, etc.), "the eagles of heaven" (Lam. 4:19), etc.
(b) The starry heavens (Deut. 17:3; Jer. 8:2; Matt. 24:29).
(c) "The heaven of heavens," or "the third heaven" (Deut. 10:14; 1 Kings 8:27; Ps. 115:16; 148:4; 2 Cor. 12:2).
Revelation 21:1 states that only the first heaven and the first earth were done away with. This would be translated as the sky. This indicates that it is specifically the earth that will be transformed and not the entire universe.
The new earth will have no more sea. Although no doubt literal in its meaning, the figurative aspect of this statement would be that there would be no more separation between people and people as well as God and people.
The earth did not always have the continents we see today. During the days of Peleg the earth was divided. The continents themselves were moved into more or less their present positions. Even today there is some residual continental drift from this titanic event:
Genesis 10:25, "And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan."
Peleg was born one hundred and one years after the great flood and he lived for only thirty years Gen. 11:18. This means that the earth was divided between one hundred and one and one hundred and thirty one years after the flood. Prior to this the earth existed as a single super-continent. This division was not long after God divided the languages and scattered men upon the earth. Gen. 11:8
