Revelation 12:7-12, "And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time."

WAR IN HEAVEN
The dragon is Satan and is also representative of a kingdom. At the birth of Jesus Satan incited a rebellion in heaven. Satan compelled one third of the angels of heaven to come down to earth with him as he attempted to destroy the messiah. These angels are better known as demons. At this point Satan is not cast out, but leaves of his own volition to try to stop Jesus the messiah from accomplishing His purposes on the earth.
Satan is described as a dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns upon his heads. This is prophetic imagery associated with a kingdom. This is the same kingdom that attempted to destroy Jesus at His birth. This is also the same kingdom that was persecuting Israel at the time. Of course we know that this kingdom was the Roman Empire.
At the time of Jesus' birth Satan tried to use Herod, a representative of Rome, to kill Jesus while Jesus was still an infant. Herod had asked the three wise men to return and tell him when they found the child for which they were looking. Herod was planning to kill Jesus. Herod then ordered his court astrologers calculate the exact date that the star appeared in heaven. When the wise men did not return Herod had his men slaughter all children under the age of two according to the date his astrologers gave him. In a vision to Joseph God warned him about what was about to happen and Joseph left with his family before the slaughter began.
Matthew 2:16-18, "Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not."
After Jesus fasts for forty days and He was at His weakest Satan again attacks. He offers Jesus all of the things he will later offer the beast that comes from the sea (Rome reborn) and unlike the beast Jesus will refuse and once again come out victorious.
Satan again tries to kill Jesus by stirring up a storm as Jesus and His disciples crossed the sea of Galilee to Gadara. Jesus calms the storm. Satan then almost immediately comes against Jesus in the form of a demon possessed man near Gadara. The Gaderene demoniac who contained a legion of Satan's fallen angels could not overcome Jesus.
Satan then resorts to his religious puppets to try and convict Jesus for crimes Jesus did not commit. Satan thought he had won the battle and he assaulted heaven thinking that he had destroyed a third part of the Godhead and in so doing had weakened God to the point that an overthrow was possible. In truth he was acting in accordance with Gods plan and the war was won through Jesus' atoning sacrifice on the cross.
At the time of the cross the dragon, Satan, and his demons attempted to return to heaven and take it over by force. They failed and were cast out of heaven never to return. Christ was then resurrected from the dead and gained the victory over death, hell and the grave.
